Do you like to doodle?
Did you ever cover your notebook with pictures, names of your boyfriends, random hearts, start, arrows, or flowers? Then this is for you.
What is it?
It's called "Zentangle" - who knew that doodling would be raised to an art form? Zentangle has probably been around for a long time, but I had never heard of it until a customer introduced me to it a few weeks ago. (Thanks Carol B - I'm COMPLETELY addicted now!)
Here are the basics - you need paper and a black pen. Since it's essentially art, use high quality paper and markers. Guess what? Stampin' Up! has both!
Cut a 3" x 3" piece of paper - I tried Whisper White, Confetti White, and Watercolor Paper. I liked all three, so it's a personal preference. (You're not breaking the rules if you use a different size, it's just doodling, so it really doesn't matter. In fact, use a different color other than black! Go crazy!)
Take your black pen and draw your "tangle". You can put a dot in each corner and connect them to make a square, then draw your lines inside, or just draw, it doesn't matter. Your "tangle" divides up the paper into different shaped sections for different patterns. Choose a section and add some sort of pattern. You can probably see that it really doesn't matter what the pattern is - just choose something and do it! Then move on to the next section. I found that it doesn't look like much when it's in progress, but when complete (about 15-20 minutes later) it's very "graphic artsy" looking. (See step by step pictures here.)
This next sample is a little more symmetrical, but still the same idea.
I love this because it's very relaxing - doodling seems to melt stress away for a few minutes. It's perfect if you're waiting at the doctor's office or something like that. Just carry paper and pen with you!
Of course, I had to take it a step further and add it to my cards! So here you go...

The first one frames a Zentangle that I cut down a little bit. Almost like a tiny piece of artwork! (That's why I used the "Small Wonder" sentiment.) Look closely though and you'll just see a bunch of randomness!
(Products used for this card.)
For the second card, I used another Zentangle as my own designer paper, and then another one I punched with the Full Heart Punch. You can't see it in this picture, but the heart is actually attached to the inside of the card with a window on the front. You can see it when you check out the products I used for the card.
I don't know if I'll use every little doodle I make with a card or scrapbook page, but now I have something else to add to my paper crafting! (Or another tool for stress relief!)
Try it and let me know what you think!
There are a lot of videos on YouTube that give different instructions - just search for "zentangle art", and I've put some pictures on my Techniques Page to show you the progression.
Have fun!
